Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship is given by University Grants Commission for the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) of India to pursue their higher studies that is M.Phil and P.hD studies. It is a Doctoral Fellowship. A total number of 2667 scholarship is provided every year for SC and ST candidates. 2000 scholarship are provided to SC and 667 scholarships are provided to the ST candidates. The Scholarship is only provided to the SC/ST students who wants to pursue their regular and full time M.Phil and P.h.D Degrees in Science, Humanities, Social Science, Engineering and Technology.
University Grants Commission which is a statutory body has launched this scholarship keeping in mind about the need of SC/ST students who want to pursue their higher studies but due to their economic condition of the family they are unable to pursue their studies. This scholarship not only helps the students to pursue their higher studies but also provide a mental support to their parents and maintain a healthy socio-economic culture in the society.
The SC/ST candidates who are the Citizen of India can only apply for this scholarship and they must have passed their PG examination in the concerned subject and who want to pursue research without JRF of UGC-NET or UGC-SCIR NET. The fellowship is only paid for two years. However, if the Scholars are found to good and satisfactory research works, then his/her tenure is extended upto three years under the emoluments of the Rajiv Gandhi Senior Research Fellowship. In case the work of the scholars found in the first two years are not satisfactory then a year will be given to them for better improvement.The scholarship is paid as Contingency amount, house rent allowance, Medical leave and sick leaves.
The candidates must apply online for RGNF Fellowship for SC/ST students and they need not to submit any kind of print out of the application form to the authority. The selection will be based on the merit list made prepared out of all the applications received for the fellowship and as per the procedure of the University Grants Commission.
Monitoring Process of the scheme: The students who have received the scholarship will get a receipt or approval letter from UGC, and then the Institutions/Bank may pay the fellowship amount to meet the expenses from the grants paid by the Commission for the purpose in accordance with the rules. The students who have received the fellowship will undertake a full time research work under the approved mentor or guide in a subject selected by them and also approved by the University/ Institution selection committee.
The fellow should not hold any appointment which is paid or unpaid or receive any kinds of stipends, salary etec from any other sources during the tenure of pursuing the programme. The decision made by UGC in any case will be considered as final and binding. No extension of scholarship will be extended beyond the period of five years.
