Joint Seat Allocation Authority has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate the joint seat allocation for admissions to 92 institutes for the academic year 2016-17.This includes 22 IITs, ISM, 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 18 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs) . The admission will be made through a single window counselling for all the academic programs by these Institutes. It consists of representatives from the JAB 2016 (for IITs/ISM) and CSAB 2016 (for NITs, IIITs, and Other-GFTIs).
Till the year 2014, Joint Admission Board (JAB) and the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducted their own JEE Counselling to offer admission in IITs, ISM Dhanbad & NITs, SFTIs respectively. But from the academic session 2015-16 onwards Common Counselling for IIT's and NIT's will be conducted to fill the seats.
The registration for Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JoSAA) 2016 will start from July 2016 after the declaration of JEE Main Paper 1 and Paper 2. The reason behind Joint Counselling and Seat Allotment is to provide a common platform for the candidates who are desirous of getting admission in India’s most prominent Engineering Institutions and they get a single platform to apply for admission to IITs, ISM, NITs, IITs and other GFTIs .Another most important reason for joint counselling is to remove the procedure of multiple reservations of the seats. Because till the last year, candidates were in a habit of reserving as many seats as they can for seeking admissions, as a result of which many seats used to remain vacant. In order to overcome this loophole in the admission system, Joint Counselling has been introduced where in students are allowed only to select colleges/courses as per their preferences/ choice but are not permitted to reserve numerous seats.
Joint Seat Allocation Authority consists of the representatives of Joint Admission Board (JAB) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Both JAB and CSAB has important works to perform. JAB conducts the JEE Advanced and then frames the policies and norms for seat allocation to IITs and ISM. CSAB frames the strategies and rules for seat allocation to NITs, IIITs and other-GFTIs.
Rank List: Joint Seat Allocation Authority will prepare 8 category wise rank lists considered for the counselling purpose. The 8 lists that will be prepared are given below:
